“Life is Mean.”— Joan Rivers – So True
I didn’t mention this in my review but one of the most poignant moments in Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work is when Rivers, who has done a lot of work for God’s Love We Deliver,a NYC-based charity organization that provides home-cooked meals to be delivered to men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other diseases, delivers a meal to a wheelchair-bound photographer named Flo Fox. Fox, who is clearly ailing from a muscular degenerative illness is delighted by Rivers’ presence, telling her how honored she is to have her in her home and how Rivers has entertained her throughout the years. Rivers graciously thanks her.
Later on, Rivers is by her computer and is watching a Youtube video clip featuring a much younger, attractive and vibrant Flo Fox being interviewed by Tom Snyder (whom all of us over 40 years old remember very well) on his old Tomorrow program. Rivers watches Fox the way she once was and shakes her head sadly, saying, “Life is mean.” It sure is. This follows a comment she makes earlier before visiting Fox when she says she can’t stand when bad things happen to good people. Again, my sentiments exactly.
Here’s part 1 of the Tom Snyder interview with Flo Fox (which Joan Rivers was watching on her computer):

Wahwowwww! Joan Rivers new doc is the number in grosses for this year. Ya killed it Joan! I loved ur movie!!
What surprised me most about Joan’s new movie is that it was incredibly honest. They didn’t paint her as a perfect person, but they definitely showed her as a real person, not just a name or a celebrity
Very true. But I think a lot of that honesty in the film is due to Joan Rivers herself. I think one reason why she can be so polarizing when it comes to the public and Hollywood is because she’s so honest. A lot of people really don’t like that. They prefer being deceived with a phony facade because it’s more comfortable that way. Illusions are easier to take than simple reality.

Thank God for Joan Rivers and Flo Fox. If it wasn’t for Joan, I would have never learned about such a gifted and inspiring artist. You should go look up all her photography. Its incredible.
Thanks for your note, Marsha. I agree with you.
